Vino Bitches: Ogio Primitivo

With the start of winter semester, it is important to ensure that support systems are prepared for inevitable late night essay-writing, midterm prepping, and numerous hours spent hunched over a textbook. For me, said “support” comes in the dark, beautiful magenta colour of red wine. And this semester, Ogio Primitivo, a Zinfandel from Italy, has been purchased in bulk — much to the dismay of my limited funds — and armed with an abundance of clean glasses, in hopes of helping me combat my way through many things this term, but specifically a 400-level English course on “spatiality.”

Ogio’s combination of favourable price and smooth blackcurrant and raspberry taste, are large appeals to any student on a budget, or for fellow (cheap) wine enthusiasts like myself. Doubtful whenever I try any wallet-friendly bottle that it will be somewhat palatable, it was a lovely surprise to find I was wrong. Ogio pours surprisingly dark, but the fruity and subtle spices make this medium wine extremely easy to drink (note to beware: overly confident and grammatically incorrect essay writing in the company of this newfound Italian friend).

Outside of being paired with endless schoolwork, this wine is a great addition to any pasta or meat entrée, a favourite of mine being the classic dish of spaghetti and meatballs. What’s more? The name is just really fun to say. Ogio Primitivo. It will channel your inner Italian no matter who you are. With all of this said, stock up on this delicious Zinfandel in bulk, whether it be to accompany you and your workload this semester, or to attend any hearty meal you may have in the future, five o’clock or not.
