Varsity weekend wrap up: February 8, 2017

Pandas Hockey

The puck Pandas pulled out a weekend sweep in Lethbridge, winning back-to-back road games against the Pronghorns.

Three different Pandas had multi-goal weekends, as the team won 4-2 and 4-3 on Friday and Saturday, respectively. With the wins, the Canada West third-ranked Pandas clinched a playoff spot, all while Head Coach Howie Draper and leading scorer Alex Poznikoff were in Kazakhstan with the Canadian Universiade Games team.

The Pandas will be back at the Clare Drake next weekend as they host the Canada West number-two ranked Manitoba Bisons. Games go at 7:00pm Friday and 2:00pm Saturday.

Golden Bears Hockey

Playing host to the Pronghorns, the Bears lost a double-overtime heartbreaker on Saturday to split the weekend series with Lethbridge.

The 4-3 overtime loss was the first home conference loss to the Pronghorns in seven seasons, and came on the heels of a 2-1 regulation win on Friday night. The Canada West #2-ranked Bears have clinched a playoff spot, and will be in Winnipeg to play the Manitoba Bisons next weekend in their last series of the regular season.

Pandas Basketball

The second-ranked Pandas Basketball squad was on the road against the Saskatchewan Huskies last weekend in a two-game series.

After a convincing 72-50 win on Friday night, the Huskies bit back on Saturday, winning 72-62 to split the series with the Pandas. Leading the way was fifth-year guard Maddie Rogers, who poured in 40 points on the weekend.

Next weekend, the Pandas will be on the road in Lethbridge to take on the Pronghorns. Games go Saturday and Sunday at 2:00pm and 5:00pm, respectively.

Golden Bears Basketball

The basket Bears also split their series with the Huskies, as Friday’s game saw them lose 68-65, with Saturday serving as a rebound win to the tune of 80-67.

Brody Clarke and Austin Waddoups led the bears with 19 and 21 points on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The #3 Bears will face the #4 Lethbridge Pronghorns next week on the road.

Highlighting the series will be the lights-out three-point combination of Waddoups and Ivan Ikomey and Saskatchewan’s Shane Osayande, who is averaging a double-double as Canada West’s leading rebounder.

Pandas Volleyball

The Volley Pandas continued their perfect season last weekend against Mount Royal, as they notched consecutive straight-sets wins.

With the wins, the Pandas beat the program record of 16 straight victories to start the season, finishing the weekend with a record of 18-0. In Friday’s win, fifth-year outside hitter Kacey Otto notched her 1,000th career conference dig, and fourth-year outside Meg Casault needs only 14 more kills to break the Canada West career record.

The Pandas will try to pad and break these records next weekend, as they host the UBCO Heat at the Saville Community Sports Centre. Matches go at 7:30pm on Friday and 6:30pm Saturday.

Golden Bears Volleyball

The Bears were forced to go to five sets in both their matches last weekend, eking out two straight 3-2 victories over the Mount Royal Cougars.

Fifth-year outside Ryan Nickifor led the way for the Bears with 47.5 points on the weekend, and the Bears will play their final home series of the regular season next week as they host the UBCO Heat.
