Top 10: Memes of 2018, Honorable Mention #1: Дpyr

In this top 10, our writer breaks down their favourite memes that came out of 2018. Pray for them and their sanity.

This wonderful meme started off as a play off the “tag your friends” image macro. You’ve seen this format before: some random Facebook page presents you with a set of archetypes, each differentiated by three or four traits. You tag your squad and all decide which cactus or cat you are.

You’re scrolling through your feed. You come across one of these macros. The image calls to you. It asks you a question: out of all your friends, which are you?

You glance at the options one by one. Truck freak. Crazy ass.

Suddenly, you see the third option. A sinister, alarming silhouette of some warped creature with long claws and horns. It lurks behind a doorway, staring at you. Your blood runs cold.

What is this horrific, awful thing? What does it want? All you can discern about it is that it’s called “Дpyr.”

Don’t worry, though! Дpyr, pronounced “droog,” merely means “friend” in Russian!

Дpyr got its start in this edit and began to lead a sort of odd life afterwards. After getting popularized by memelord Pewdiepie, people began to affectionately use Дpyr in a ton of other memes, perhaps in a way to get beyond his scary appearance. Some wanted to award Дpyr with the Nobel Peace Prize. Some wanted to take a bath with him. Some even wanted to mate with him.

Same, dude. Same.

Дpyr hasn’t had a lot of staying power, though, and has faded into the background. While he was only here for a short time in 2018, I was infatuated with him the whole time.
