Top 10: Memes of 2018, Honorable Mention #7: Elon Musk Smoking Weed

In this top 10, our writer breaks down their favourite memes that came out of 2018. Pray for them and their sanity.

Oh Elon. My sweet, sweet Elon. You’ve had a wild year, buddy. Sit back and smoke some kush, dude. You deserve it.

Look at the man’s face while he hit the blunt. Look at it. Is this not the face of a madman?

Elon Musk is already a pretty meme-y gentleman. He’s sent a Tesla car into space, sold a consumer flamethrower, and professed his love for anime on Twitter.

So of course when Joe Rogan had Elon Musk on his podcast, it was no surprise that Musk didn’t object to smoking up live for the countless viewers of the Joe Rogan Experience. Everything about this image is perfect: the plumes of smoke surrounding his face, the squint of his eyes, a facial expression that screams “that’s goooooooooood shit, bro.” Seeing Musk, an already enigmatic figure, 420 blaze-it, comes across as so absurd that you can’t help but laugh.

Musk didn’t get away from this moment of meme magic scott-free, however. He got a lot of backlash, with some attacking him for being impure and un-Christian, while others were pissed about how he was able to get away with smoking weed while forcing his employees to go through rigorous drug testing in order to keep their jobs.

This all happened while Musk was under investigation by the SEC for possibly violating US securities law after joking about taking Tesla private at $420 per share on Twitter. Wow. Musk really is playing 4D chess constantly.

Without all the context of the man smoking the blunt, this meme wouldn’t be nearly as funny as it is, which is why it’s merely an honorable mention. And while I do find him deplorable, I gotta thank Musk for producing this gem in 2018.
