As the great and wise Demi Lovato once said in an interview with Energy Startalk, “I like mugs because they’re very comfortable in your hand and they hold the hot things that you don’t have to touch — so, um, you know, coffee or hot tea.”

And how right she was. Mugs are one of the most versatile kinds of kitchenware: Not only can they hold hot liquids, but they can also hold a sweet, delicious treat right in the comfort of your palm. The following is one of my most prized recipes. It can cure just about any late-night craving or a serious case of the munchies.

Side note: I call it “my” recipe, but this isn’t my recipe at all — I just happened to make it so often that I memorized it. Therefore, I have now obtained full ownership of it. I present to you, “Brownie in a Mug.”

All you need to make this is a mug, a tablespoon, and maybe another spoon so you can eat it.

Oh, and the ingredients of course:

  • 3 tablespoons flour*
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (or maple syrup if you’re feeling fancy)
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • As many chocolate chips as your heart desires

That’s it! Just toss all the ingredients into a mug and stir it until it looks something like brownie batter. The best part is you can eat it as-is, like the feral beast you are, or you can nuke it for a few seconds to get a more cake-like indulgence. Whatever your choice, this recipe is a winner. Also, it’s vegan, so it’s at least a little bit healthy… right?

*If you’re a true Health God™, you might know that eating raw flour is frowned upon in some communities because of bacteria or whatever. If this is a concern for you, just spread the flour on a tinfoil-lined baking sheet and bake it for a few minutes at 350°F. But, come on, who has time for that? Life is about taking risks!
