In our weekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!

What: Ice on Whyte

When: January 27 to February 6
Where: Dr. Wilbert McIntyre Park
Admission: $6 for adults, $4 for children aged two to 13

If you’re looking for something to do in the cold, check out this creative ice sculpture garden! You can try your hand at ice carving, watch demonstrations from professional ice and snow sculptors, take a food walk tour, or just walk around the beautiful garden! With professionals showcasing their abilities, this is sure to be a cool event.

International Week at the University of Alberta hosts a variety of speakers from all over the world, focusing on what our local and international community members are doing to help achieve the United Nations’s Sustainable Development Goals. There will be keynote speeches, a trivia night, and even an Afro-fusion dance workshop!

What: Jesse Lipscombe presents in the Lougheed College Lectures

When: February 3 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Jesse Lipscombe is an actor, producer, entrepreneur, and activist. In this lecture Lipscombe will speak about how those in leadership positions can play a role in creating an equitable workplace and environment. If you’re interested in improving your leadership abilities, this is for you!

What: She Kills Monsters

When: February 4 to 12
Where: Timms Centre for the Arts
Admission: Adult $25.00, Senior $22.00, and Student $12.00

After Agnes’s sister Tilly passes away, Agnes must dive into Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons world to unearth her sister’s secrets. Written by award-winning playwright Qui Ngyuen, this U of A department of drama production explores themes of finding yourself, loss, and acceptance.

Jin He

Jin previously served as the 2021-22 Production Editor at The Gateway. She also had a brief stint as 2022-23 Production Editor. She is in her first year studying pharmacy. If not sleeping, she can often be found supporting local artisans, obsessing over e-sports, and sporting some wicked earrings.
