In our weekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!

What: World Day of Social Justice

When: February 15 to 17
Where: Virtual
Admission: Free

World Day of Social Justice is recognized internationally on February 20. Leading up to that date, the University of Alberta will be holding four virtual workshops on February 15 to 17. Touching on subjects like welcoming classrooms and Indigenous issues, this is a workshop series for those looking to learn more about creating a more just society.

What: Paint Night

When: February 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Where: Van Vliet Complex 3-209
Admission: $20.00 for students, $24.00 for staff, and $26.00 for the public

If you’re looking for a way to relax, this is the activity for you! All necessary materials will be provided, so you can attend with just your enthusiasm to create! There will be an instructor guiding you through an acrylic painting, and music as you relax.

What: Tenderness with Titilope Sonuga

When: February 16 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Where: Virtual
Admission: Free

Titilope Sonuga is Edmonton’s Poet Laureate but also an alumni of the U of A. She will be showcasing the importance of tenderness in a unique performance of poetry and music with multi-instrumentalist Enoch Attey. After the performance, there will also be a conversation with Rayanne Haines exploring Sonuga’s life and work.

What: Art in Focus: A Conversation with Braxton Garneau

When: February 17 at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Zoom
Admission: Free

Braxton Garneau is an emerging Edmonton artist that is also an alumni of the U of A. He explores the materiality of culture and intertwines his practices with his own Caribbean heritage. This conversation will be held with Nadia Kurd, curator of the University of Alberta Museums Art Collection, as well as Garneau.

Jin He

Jin previously served as the 2021-22 Production Editor at The Gateway. She also had a brief stint as 2022-23 Production Editor. She is in her first year studying pharmacy. If not sleeping, she can often be found supporting local artisans, obsessing over e-sports, and sporting some wicked earrings.
